Cindy Blackstock wins Human Rights Award

Published: 1 June 2016

The Law Society of Upper Canada has named Cindy Blackstock, CRCF member from the School of Social Work, as one of the winners of the 2016 Human Rights Award. Established in 2013, the award recognizes outstanding contributions to the advancement of human rights and/or the promotion of the rule of law provincially, nationally or internationally. It is granted biennially to individuals for their devotion to these principles over a long term, or for a single, outstanding act of service. Professor Blackstock commented that this award is in recognition of a collective effort made by everyone at the First Nations Child & Family Caring Society of Canada including a "great team of lawyers, para-legals and volunteer law students". The special presentation will be held in Toronto on February 22, 2017.

The other winner is Waleed Abu al-Khair, a prominent human rights lawyer and activist in Saudi Arabia.
