Delve: the official thought leadership publication of McGill University’s Desautels Faculty of Management

The Marcel Desautels Institute for Integrated Management (MDIIM)

Championing an integrated management approach that includes cross-disciplinary programs and the linking of teaching, research, and practice

Thanks to Marcel Desautels’ generous donation and vision for management education, our Faculty established The Marcel Desautels Institute for Integrated Management (MDIIM) in 2008. Integrated management constructively faces the tensions of different perspectives on value to implement strategies that transcend rather than accept trade-offs. MDIIM’s mandate is to develop an integrated approach to management for the Faculty—one that breaks down disciplinary barriers, embraces multiple perspectives, and encourages holistic, context-sensitive thinking about organizations.

Sustainability Degree Program

Sustainability is a societal ideal and criterion for development which resembles other widely accepted but conceptually challenging human goals, such as justice and freedom. Because scientific understandings of how nature functions change over time, and because value judgments are involved, it is impossible to define precise conditions for sustainability once and for all. Nonetheless, it is possible to discern its general orientations, which include pursuing economic prosperity while living within the carrying capacity of ecosystems and achieving social equity.
