Graduate Programs

The School offers programs at the graduate level, including Graduate Certificates, a Master of Information Studies and PhD in Information Studies. 

Master of Information Studies

Both MISt programs prepare graduates to work as information professionals in a wide range of information environments or to pursue further research and academic studies in library and information studies. Courses are available in areas of interest such as library studies; knowledge management; information and communication technology; and archival studies. Students have the flexibility to focus on one area of interest or combine courses from across information studies domains.

PhD in Information Studies

The PhD in Information Studies provides an opportunity for exceptional candidates to study interdisciplinary research topics at the doctoral level. The program aims to ensure that its graduates will be able to develop knowledge and critical awareness of relevant theories, principles and methods in information studies and to acquire the expertise to conduct and promote scholarly research in the context of information studies.

Graduate Certificate in Digital Archives Management

For students or professionals holding a bachelor's degree or higher. Courses focus on principles and practices in archival studies, digital curation, strategies for digital preservation, and enterprise content management. All courses are offered on-site at McGill University. The program may be completed within two academic semesters (Fall/Winter), or to a maximum of three years. Both Fall and Winter entry is offered.

Graduate Certificate in Information Architecture

For students or professionals holding a bachelor's degree or higher. Courses focus on design and assessment of information systems, databases, websites, and interfaces. Techniques for data mining and issues related information security are also covered. All courses are offered on-site at McGill University. The program may be completed within two academic semesters (Fall/Winter), or to a maximum of three years. Both Fall and Winter entry is offered.

Graduate Certificate in Library & Information Studies

For library and information professionals holding a master's degree from an American Library Association (ALA)-accredited program. The Graduate Certificate in Library & Information Studies program is a 15-credit program which allows professional librarians and information specialists currently holding a master's degree from an American Library Association (ALA)-accredited Master of Library & Information Studies program to enrich their current portfolio.
